Soils Metadata

 

Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) data for Dane County was developed by USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The data set is not designed for use as a primary regulatory tool in permitting or citing decisions, but may be used as a reference source. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, should be acknowledged as the data source in products derived from these data.

 

The Dane County Soils polygons were downloaded from the USDA NRCS Soil Data Mart web site on May 25, 2005.

sort = numerical symbol with alpha slope letter and erosion class number stripped off of mapunit symbol for sorting
mukey = mapunit key

musym = mapunit symbol that is attached to each polygon on digital maps and appears in each delineation on paper soil maps

muname = mapunit name associated with each mapunit symbol

mukind = Indicates whether Consociaton (one major component), Complex (two or more dissimilar major components that

occur in a regularly repeating pattern; cannot be separated at 1:24000), Association (two or more dissimilar major components that occur in a regularly repeating pattern; could be separated at 1:24000), or Undifferentiated groups ( two or more major components that are not consistently associated geographically, therefore do not always occur together in the same map unit)

muacres:i = calculated mapunit acres on digital soil maps (I = integer)

farmlndcl = farmland classification based on NSSH and Wisconsin criteria (does not include unique farmland and farmland of local importance designations which are assigned locally)

muhelcl = highly erodible land designation

PI:i = Wisconsin Productivity Index, base 100 for entire state, reflects productive potential & economic return for 10 commonly grown crops

Picrop:c = The major crop used to calculate PI

slope = range of the percent slope of all major components in the mapunit

slope_l = lowest percent slope of the major components in the mapunit

slope_h = highes percent slope of the major components in the mapunit

slope_av = average percent slope, weighted by component percent, of the major components in the mapunit

muscl = mapunit capability subclass (for multitaxa mapunits, the dominant component (by %) capability subclass is given)

domcl = dominant capability class

domscl = dominant capability subclass

LEag_wi = Land Evaluation for Agriculture, 0 to 100 for Wisconsin

AWC10 = inches of available water in the upper 10 inches of soil

AWC40 = inches of available water in the upper 40 inches of soil

AWC10g = AWC group name (for upper 10 inches of soil)

AWC40g = AWC group name (for upper 40 inches of soil)

mudrain = mapunit drainage class(es)

hydgrp_r = dominant condition mapunit hydrologic group

muhg_dr = mapunit hydrologic group for a drained condition

muhg_ud = mapunit hydrologic group for an undrained condition

muhg = mapunit hydrologic group

infil = infiltration class

murunoff = surface runoff class

Tlow = lowest T factor for any major component in mapunit

Tave = average T factor for all major components in mapunit

Kf_hi:f = An erodibility factor which quantifies the susceptibility of soil particles to detachment by water (high value)

Kw_hi:f = An erodibility factor which quantifies the susceptibility of soil particles to detachment and movement by water. This factor is adjusted for the effect of rock fragments (high value)

Kf_ave = Kf average

Kw_ave = Kw average

flodfreqcl = flooding frequency class for mapunit

pondfreqcl = ponding frequency class for mapunit

hard_brl = shallowest depth to indurated bedrock for mapunit

soft_brl = shallowest depth to weakly cemented bedrock for mapunit

hard_bra = average depth to indurated bedrock for mapunit

soft_bra = average depth to weakly cemented bedrock for mapunit

brdep = the shallowest depth to any root limiting restriction for mapunit

brclass:c = depth class to any root limiting restriction for mapunit (corresponds to brdep)

OM7 = percent organic matter in the upper 7 inches, weighted by component percent for map unit

clay7 = percent clay in upper 7 inches
